CTO Asserts ‘No One is Above the Law’ in Drive for Safer Roads
In a bold and uncompromising move, Lahore’s Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Athar Waheed has confirmed that 93 police officers were fined in a single day for violating traffic laws. The move is part of a broader crackdown on traffic violations across the city, with authorities adopting a strict “no exceptions” policy — even for those in uniform.
Speaking to the media, CTO Waheed emphasized the importance of accountability and fairness in enforcing the law. “No one is above the law,” he declared. “Those responsible for upholding the rules must set an example themselves.” His comments reflect a growing commitment within the traffic department to restore order and discipline on Lahore’s increasingly congested and chaotic roads.
Since taking charge, CTO Waheed has overseen the arrest of over 27,000 individuals for various traffic violations, a figure that underscores the scale of the challenge facing the city. Violations range from running red lights and driving without a license to more serious infractions like reckless driving and lack of vehicle documentation.
Lawyers, Too, Must Comply with Helmet Rule
In addition to targeting the police, CTO Waheed addressed another group often considered untouchable in civic matters — the legal community. He made it clear that lawyers would not receive any special treatment under the new traffic enforcement policies. Referring specifically to the mandatory helmet rule, he said, “If the bar wishes to go on strike, they are free to do so — but helmets will be mandatory for all riders, including lawyers.”
The CTO’s stance sends a strong message that road safety and the rule of law are paramount. “Whether it’s a common citizen, a police officer, or a lawyer — everyone must follow the rules,” he said. “If we want safer roads, accountability must begin at the top.”
