Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir has undertaken an official visit to the United States, engaging with senior civil and military leadership to strengthen bilateral cooperation. The visit featured multiple strategic-level meetings aimed at enhancing Pakistan-US defence ties, exploring economic opportunities, and reinforcing regional security collaboration.
In Tampa, Field Marshal Munir attended the retirement ceremony of outgoing United States Central Command (Centcom) Commander, General Michael E. Kurilla, and witnessed the Change of Command ceremony as Admiral Brad Cooper assumed the role. During the event, the army chief praised General Kurilla’s leadership and contributions toward enhancing Pakistan-US defence cooperation, while expressing optimism about continued collaboration under Admiral Cooper’s command.
Strengthening Defence Partnerships
The visit also included a meeting with General Dan Caine, Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, where both sides discussed matters of mutual professional interest. Field Marshal Munir extended an invitation for General Caine to visit Pakistan, reinforcing the commitment to deepening defence relations. On the sidelines, the COAS interacted with defence chiefs from allied and partner nations, discussing shared security challenges and future cooperation frameworks.
Engagement with Pakistani Diaspora
A key highlight of the visit was Field Marshal Munir’s interactive session with the Pakistani diaspora in the US. Addressing community members, he urged them to remain confident in Pakistan’s promising future and to actively support initiatives that encourage foreign investment. Members of the diaspora expressed their continued commitment to contributing toward Pakistan’s progress, highlighting the vital role overseas Pakistanis play in economic and diplomatic engagement.
Follow-Up to June 2025 Visit
This trip builds upon Field Marshal Munir’s earlier visit to the US in June 2025, during which he met with President Donald Trump over a luncheon meeting lasting more than two hours. That discussion focused on expanding cooperation in diverse fields, including trade, economic development, mining, artificial intelligence, energy, cryptocurrency, and emerging technologies.
Following the June meeting, Pakistan and the US reached a significant trade agreement. President Trump later announced that both nations would work together to develop Pakistan’s oil reserves and were in the process of selecting an oil company to lead the partnership.
Recognition of Defence Cooperation
In July 2025, President Asif Ali Zardari conferred the Nishan-e-Imtiaz (Military) on General Kurilla in recognition of his role in advancing regional peace and strengthening Pakistan-US military ties. During his visit to Pakistan, General Kurilla held discussions with senior political and military leaders, including President Zardari and Field Marshal Munir. Topics included regional stability, counter-terrorism initiatives, and measures to address emerging transnational threats.
Field Marshal Asim Munir’s current visit underscores the importance of Pakistan-US relations at both strategic and people-to-people levels. By combining high-level defence engagement with outreach to the Pakistani diaspora, the trip reflects a multifaceted approach aimed at securing Pakistan’s security interests while opening new avenues for economic cooperation.
