Tennis legend Venus Williams has been immortalized as the latest member of Barbie’s Inspiring Women collection, in recognition of her extraordinary achievements both on and off the court. The seven-time Grand Slam champion is being celebrated not only for her athletic dominance but also for her groundbreaking advocacy for gender pay equity in sports.
The commemorative doll captures a defining moment in Williams’ career — her 2007 Wimbledon victory, the same year she helped secure equal prize money for women at the prestigious tournament. The doll replicates the outfit she wore during that historic win, where she defeated Marion Bartoli to claim her fourth Wimbledon singles title while making lasting change in tennis.
Barbie announced the release on Instagram, writing: “A masterful match. Venus Williams is a seven-time Grand Slam champ and an advocate for gender pay equity in sports, serving greatness on and off the court!”
A Full-Circle Moment for a Game-Changer
Speaking to USA Today ahead of the doll’s August 15 release, Williams described the honour as deeply personal: “To see that moment honoured with a Barbie doll is incredibly special. I hope it inspires young girls to speak up, believe in themselves, and know they have the power to change the game too.”
Venus joins an elite list of trailblazing women in the Barbie Inspiring Women series, including Maya Angelou, Ida B. Wells, Celia Cruz, and Anna Sui.
According to Mattel, Williams was actively involved in the design process, ensuring the doll reflected her authentic style. The miniature Venus wears her iconic green gem necklace, drop earrings, white wristbands, a white visor, and Reebok sneakers — all matching her 2007 Wimbledon look.
For Williams, the doll is a “full-circle moment.” For the world, it’s a tribute to a champion who changed the game far beyond the court.
