A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll reveals that a majority of Americans believe countries around the world should recognize Palestine as a sovereign state, amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
Strong Public Support for Palestinian Recognition
According to the survey, 58% of Americans agree that all United Nations member states should formally recognize Palestine. In contrast, 33% disagreed, while 9% did not provide an opinion. The poll highlighted a clear partisan divide: 78% of Democrats supported recognition, whereas only 41% of Republicans agreed. A slight majority of Republicans, 53%, opposed the idea.
This growing public sentiment in the United States could signal shifting international perceptions, as Israel has historically relied on strong U.S. political and financial backing, including billions in annual military aid.
Context of the Gaza Conflict
The Gaza conflict, which erupted on October 7, 2023, began when Hamas militants crossed into Israel, resulting in the deaths of 1,200 people and the taking of 251 hostages. Israel’s military retaliation has since claimed the lives of more than 62,000 Palestinians, creating a severe humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, with mass displacement and widespread destruction.
The ongoing conflict has also been compounded by Israel’s controversial settlement plan in the West Bank, approved recently, which the Palestinians claim undermines their aspirations for a viable state. Meanwhile, international concern continues to rise over the dire humanitarian situation, with aid organizations warning that Gaza faces the threat of famine.
Calls for U.S. Humanitarian Intervention
The poll also showed that 65% of Americans believe the United States should take steps to alleviate starvation in Gaza, while 28% disagreed. The opposition primarily came from Republicans, reflecting an “America First” approach that prioritizes domestic over international aid.
Views on Israel’s Military Response
A significant 59% of Americans consider Israel’s military actions in Gaza to have been excessive, compared to 33% who disagreed. This figure has increased slightly from a similar Reuters/Ipsos survey in February 2024, where 53% deemed the response excessive.
International Pressure and Ceasefire Efforts
The poll comes as Israel and Hamas discuss the possibility of a ceasefire. Several countries, including Canada, Britain, and France, have indicated intentions to formally recognize Palestine, adding diplomatic pressure on Israel. Meanwhile, the United Nations and humanitarian organizations continue to highlight the urgent need for aid delivery to prevent widespread starvation in Gaza.
Poll Methodology
The Reuters/Ipsos online survey collected responses from 4,446 U.S. adults, with a margin of error of approximately two percentage points. The findings reflect not only public opinion on Palestinian recognition but also attitudes toward humanitarian intervention and perceptions of Israel’s military operations.
