KARACHI/SANGHAR — The death of journalist Khawar Hussain has officially been ruled a suicide, according to findings from a three-member investigative committee that submitted its final 30-page report to Sindh Inspector General Ghulam Nabi Memon on Friday.
Hussain, a young journalist affiliated with a private news channel, was discovered dead in his car under mysterious circumstances outside a restaurant on Hyderabad Road in Sanghar last week. His sudden death had initially sparked concern and speculation.
Investigation Finds No Evidence of Foul Play
The investigation team, led by Additional IG Azad Khan, with DIG Irfan Baloch and SSP Abid Baloch as members, concluded that suicide was the sole cause of death. The conclusion was based on a comprehensive review of:
-
Crime scene evidence
-
Eyewitness testimonies
-
CCTV footage
-
Post-mortem and forensic reports
-
Call data records
An eight-page medical report included in the findings confirmed that the fatal bullet wound was self-inflicted, using Hussain’s licensed pistol. A civil surgeon involved in the post-mortem earlier stated, “The evidence so far indicates suicide.”
Investigators traced Hussain’s movements through CCTV footage from Karachi to Sanghar, including recordings from the hotel parking area. Footage showed him entering and exiting a restaurant twice before returning to his vehicle, where he remained for nearly two hours before the incident occurred.
DIG Irfan Baloch confirmed, “The CCTV footage shows no one approaching Hussain’s car during the critical period.”
Unanswered Questions and Missing Device
While the cause of death has been established, investigators noted that understanding why Hussain took his life would require cooperation from his family. The report highlighted that, shortly before his death, Hussain made online payments to a water tanker driver after arranging water delivery to his home.
Police recovered one of his two mobile phones, while the second remains missing. Investigators hope it could offer further insights into his state of mind in the hours leading up to his death.
Hussain had worked in Karachi’s media circuit for nearly a decade, contributing to several news organisations during his journalism career.
