Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan has directed the National Highway Authority (NHA) to remove physical barriers from motorways. He emphasized that the move will improve traffic flow and ensure safer travel experiences for commuters across Pakistan.
Strengthening E-Tag System and Introducing AI
During a high-level meeting at the NHA headquarters in Islamabad, Aleem Khan stressed the importance of making the E-tag system more efficient and accessible. He was informed that, in the first phase, artificial intelligence technology would be introduced on M-1 and M-2 motorways. This system is expected to enhance toll collection and reduce manual interventions.
The minister stated that human life holds greater importance than traffic fines. Therefore, he instructed motorway police to avoid abrupt vehicle stops for overspeeding. Instead, traffic violations should be communicated to vehicle owners through mobile text messages.
Focus on Safety and Environment
Aleem Khan also directed officials to prioritize public safety while modernizing motorway management. He instructed that the private sector be engaged in large-scale tree plantation projects along both sides of the motorways. The initiative is aimed at improving environmental sustainability and enhancing the visual appeal of national routes.
Furthermore, the minister ordered the NHA to submit daily progress reports to the secretary and chairman. This step will ensure accountability and continuous monitoring of reforms.
Commercial Policy Along National Highways
The meeting also reviewed plans to introduce a uniform commercial policy for businesses located along national highways. Aleem Khan emphasized that all revenue collection must be digitized for transparency and efficiency.
He proposed setting a fair and practical No Objection Certificate (NOC) fee for commercial land use. Additionally, he suggested creating separate categories based on city size and type of business, ensuring that policies remain equitable across regions.
Towards Modernized Motorway Management
Aleem Khan’s directives reflect a broader vision of modernizing Pakistan’s motorway network. The removal of barriers, introduction of AI technology, and digitization of toll systems are expected to create smoother traffic flow, reduce corruption, and enhance safety for all road users.
By combining efficiency, technology, and environmental care, the reforms aim to establish Pakistan’s motorway network as a modern, safe, and eco-friendly infrastructure model.
