Moderate Earthquake Jolts Islamabad and Surrounding Regions
Islamabad, August 20, 2025 — Residents across Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were startled on Tuesday morning by a 5.2 magnitude earthquake originating from the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the quake occurred at approximately 12:20 am local time, with an estimated focus depth of 190 kilometres, although some seismic centres reported a depth closer to 114 km.
Widespread Tremors Felt—No Damage Reported
The tremors were also registered in Peshawar, Mansehra, Swat, Chitral, and Abbottabad, as well as in AJK, Charsadda, and Karak. Despite the seismic event’s scale, authorities have confirmed there were no immediate reports of casualties or structural damage. Buildings remained stable, and emergency services reported no emergencies stemming from the event.
