Israeli Drone Attack Sparks Fire, Hostage Situation
An LPG tanker carrying 27 crew members, including 24 Pakistanis, was attacked by an Israeli drone at Yemen’s Ras al-Esa port on September 17, 2025. The port is under Houthi control. One tank exploded during the strike, but the fire was quickly extinguished by the crew. The vessel was later intercepted by Houthi boats, and the crew was held onboard the ship.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the incident and reported that all crew members, including Captain Mukhtar Akbar, are safe. Two Sri Lankans and one Nepali were also among the crew. The LPG tanker has since left Yemeni waters and is currently sailing in safer territory.
Quick Diplomatic Response Ensures Safe Release
Following the incident, Pakistan’s embassy in Yemen acted swiftly. Authorities contacted local officials and kept families informed throughout the ordeal. Interior Minister Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi acknowledged the efforts of Secretary Interior Khurram Agha, Ambassador Naveed Bokhari in Oman, and officials in Saudi Arabia.
Thanks to coordinated efforts, the crew and vessel were safely released by Houthi forces. The interior minister expressed gratitude to all involved in the successful operation and assured that the situation was being monitored closely.
“Pakistan Hamesha Zindabad,” said Naqvi, celebrating the crew’s safe return.
