Afghanistan has officially withdrawn from the upcoming T20 tri-nation cricket series scheduled to be held in Pakistan next month. The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) announced that it will not participate in the series as a mark of protest over a recent tragic incident in Afghanistan’s Paktika province.
The tri-series, which was set to feature Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka, is now expected to proceed without the Afghan side. The tournament was scheduled to run from November 17 to 29, featuring matches hosted across multiple venues in Pakistan.
ACB Cites Paktika Incident as Reason for Withdrawal
According to a statement from the Afghanistan Cricket Board, the decision came in response to the Paktika incident, where Afghan civilians reportedly lost their lives. The ACB stated that under the current circumstances, it could not in good conscience compete against Pakistan, emphasizing that the move reflected “solidarity with the people affected by the tragedy.”
The board further highlighted that Afghanistan’s participation in sports must align with national sentiments, especially when cross-border tensions impact public emotions.
PCB Expresses Regret and Hopes for Future Cooperation
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) expressed regret over Afghanistan’s decision but reiterated its commitment to maintaining strong cricketing relations between the two nations. A PCB spokesperson said that while the board respected ACB’s stance, it remained optimistic that “sports diplomacy can help bridge divides and promote peace in the region.”
The spokesperson added, “We value our cricketing ties with Afghanistan and hope that circumstances will allow both nations to meet on the field once again soon.”
Pakistan Plans to Continue Series with Sri Lanka
Following Afghanistan’s withdrawal, the PCB confirmed that the tri-nation T20 series will continue as scheduled, with Pakistan and Sri Lanka competing. Discussions are underway to invite another team to fill Afghanistan’s spot and ensure the event retains its tri-nation format.
“The option for a third team is being explored, and formal talks are in progress,” the PCB representative noted. “A final decision on the replacement team will be announced shortly.”
Future of Pakistan-Afghanistan Cricket Relations
Cricket has long served as a symbolic bridge between Pakistan and Afghanistan, often transcending political tensions. However, the latest development has added uncertainty to their future engagements.
Analysts suggest that while the decision underscores strained relations, both boards have previously shown resilience in restoring sporting ties after political disagreements.
The upcoming series, even without Afghanistan’s participation, is expected to draw significant attention from fans, particularly given Sri Lanka’s recent strong form in T20 cricket.
