A Journey Through Life and Cricket
After more than two years away from the international stage, New Zealand bowler Blair Tickner is back, bringing with him not just experience but perspective shaped by life’s unexpected challenges. His absence from the team coincided with one of the most difficult periods in his life: in May 2024, while playing for Derbyshire in England, Tickner’s wife Sarah was diagnosed with leukaemia. The news came just before a County Championship match against Sussex, and despite Derbyshire and their opponents agreeing he could step aside, the ECB insisted he play. Amid trips to the hospital and family concerns, Tickner produced an impressive personal best score of 47.
Since then, Sarah has entered remission, though she continues monthly chemotherapy. The ordeal forced Tickner to re-evaluate priorities, recognizing that “things are bigger than cricket.” Supporting his wife and raising their young daughter Flo became paramount, and he accepted the possibility that his career could be on hold indefinitely. Yet even through chemotherapy gaps, he managed to continue playing locally and returned to Derbyshire this past summer.
A Joyful Return and Renewed Perspective
Tickner’s international call-up came unexpectedly when Kyle Jamieson was ruled out of the ODI series against England. At 32, he admitted the news left him speechless, sharing the moment with his extended family who supported them throughout the ordeal. “My little one has never seen me play for New Zealand, so it’s a special time for our family,” he said, reflecting on the significance of the return.
His teammate Daryl Mitchell welcomed him back, praising his energy, pace, and team spirit. Tickner himself emphasized how the past few years reshaped his approach to cricket: playing freely, enjoying the game, and embracing the moment without self-imposed pressure. “If I get the chance, I’ll be the real Blair Tickner I wanted to be a few years ago,” he said.
Tickner’s return is more than a comeback; it is a story of resilience, perspective, and renewed love for the sport he cherishes.
