ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday praised coalition partners for supporting the 27th Constitutional Amendment, calling it a reflection of “national unity and collective resolve.”
PM Hosts Dinner for Lawmakers
The premier hosted a dinner for government and coalition senators after a joint parliamentary committee approved the draft of the proposed amendment. The committee, comprising members from the Senate and National Assembly’s law and justice committees, gave clause-by-clause approval to 49 amendments.
Government Lauds Unity and Teamwork
PM Shehbaz said all allied parties “stood firmly behind the government’s national approach,” adding that cooperation strengthened the federation. He emphasized that governance and harmony among provinces improved due to this unity.
“Our diplomatic success and Pakistan’s improved global image reflect coalition unity and coordination,” the prime minister stated.
Economic Progress and Political Stability
The premier said Pakistan’s economic outlook was improving, crediting responsible governance and political stability for progress. “With Allah’s grace, stability has set the nation on the right path,” he added.
He also thanked President Asif Ali Zardari and coalition leaders for supporting democracy and national cohesion.
Opposition Boycotts Session
Opposition parties, including PTI, JUI-F, PkMAP, and MWM, boycotted the meeting, with their members absent. The amendment bill, already approved by the cabinet, will be presented in the Senate on Monday.
Key Constitutional Changes Proposed
The amendment proposes replacing the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee with a new “Chief of Defence Forces” title. It also suggests forming a Federal Constitutional Court and altering the judicial appointment process.
Army chief/Field Marshal
Will the army chief and Field Marshal General Asim Munir be a beneficiary of the 27th Constitutional Amendment? This question has become a talk of the town in the country and abroad.
