Tehreek Tahafuz-e-Ayeen-e-Pakistan (TTAP), a coalition of major opposition parties, strongly denounced the recently passed 27th Constitutional Amendment, calling it an “assault on the basic structure of the Constitution” and a direct threat to judicial independence. The alliance announced a series of nationwide protests to resist the amendment and demand the restoration of the Constitution in its original form.
The declaration followed a high-level meeting chaired by TTAP President Mahmood Khan Achakzai, attended by prominent political leaders including Asad Qaiser, Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan, Salman Akram Raja, Akhtar Mengal, Zain Shah, Sajid Tareen, Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar, and Firdous Shamim Naqvi.
Opposition Rejects Amendments, Praises Judges’ Resignations
In its communique, TTAP stated that the 26th and 27th Amendments collectively weaken democratic foundations by placing the judiciary under executive influence and “crippling the authority” of the Supreme Court.
The alliance rejected what it described as “person-specific amendments” and demanded an immediate return to the Constitution’s original structure.
TTAP leaders also hailed the resignations of Supreme Court Justices Mansoor Ali Shah and Athar Minallah, describing their decisions as acts of courage and resistance against “constitutional robbery.” The movement praised judges who, in its words, “chose to uphold their oath during a constitutional crisis.”
The participants further endorsed the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Aman Jirga declaration, urging its complete implementation.
Nationwide Protest Plan Unveiled
TTAP announced an extensive protest schedule to mobilize public pressure. On Monday, opposition members of the National Assembly and Senate will march from Parliament House to the Supreme Court.
A resolution against the 27th Amendment will be presented in the KP Assembly the same day, while Punjab Assembly members will march to the Lahore High Court in protest.
Lawyers in Lahore are expected to join the demonstrations, with the movement declaring next Friday as a nationwide “Black Day”.
The alliance also demanded the immediate release of PTI founder Imran Khan, his wife Bushra Bibi, detained PTI leaders and workers, as well as members of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee.
