Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and King Abdullah of Jordan held extensive talks in Islamabad, reaffirming their commitment to stronger strategic, economic, and cultural relations. The discussions highlighted expanding cooperation in trade, investment, health, science, technology, education, and defence.
High-level officials, including Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir and senior federal ministers, attended the talks and a dinner hosted for the visiting monarch.
Both leaders emphasized the importance of coordination at regional and international forums. They underlined mutual interests in boosting strategic and economic linkages between Pakistan and Jordan.
Shared Stance on Gaza and Regional Stability
Prime Minister Shehbaz described King Abdullah’s visit as a testament to the “enduring friendship” between the two nations. Meanwhile, King Abdullah expressed gratitude for Pakistan’s consistent support for Jordan’s diplomatic and humanitarian efforts in Gaza.
The leaders reiterated their principled position on Palestine, rejecting any post-war arrangements that could displace Palestinians from Gaza. They also discussed the Sharm el-Sheikh peace agreement and agreed to strengthen collaboration among the eight Arab and Islamic countries working with the United States to secure a lasting ceasefire.
Additionally, PM Shehbaz briefed the Jordanian monarch on developments in Pakistan’s neighbourhood, particularly Afghanistan and India. King Abdullah acknowledged Pakistan’s “key role” in ensuring regional stability.
Expanding Cooperation Through MoUs
Following the discussions, both countries signed memorandums of understanding in media, culture, and education, aimed at boosting bilateral cooperation. These agreements are expected to create new opportunities for exchange and collaboration.
The prime minister hosted a formal dinner for King Abdullah and his delegation, further highlighting the cordial ties between the two nations.
Official Reception and Symbolic Gestures
King Abdullah arrived in Islamabad for a two-day official visit and was welcomed by President Asif Ali Zardari, PM Shehbaz, and senior officials, including First Lady Aseefa Bhutto Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.
The Jordanian monarch received a Guard of Honour at the Prime Minister House and planted a sapling as part of the official reception. These gestures symbolize the growing friendship and commitment to long-term collaboration between Pakistan and Jordan.
This visit is expected to add fresh momentum to Pakistan-Jordan relations across political, economic, and cultural spheres. Both nations aim to enhance strategic coordination, trade partnerships, and educational and technological cooperation, reinforcing their longstanding alliance.
