Extortion threats resurfaced in Karachi when gunmen targeted a car showroom on New M.A. Jinnah Road on Tuesday. Authorities confirmed that the attack followed the owners’ refusal to pay an extortion demand of Rs5 million.
Threats and Attack on Showroom
According to police reports, an unidentified suspect allegedly called showroom owner Nawab and demanded the payment. The caller warned that non-compliance would result in “serious consequences.” Shortly afterward, gunmen opened fire outside the showroom. A vehicle parked in front of the showroom was damaged, but thankfully, no one was injured.
Police quickly responded to the incident, secured the area, and began collecting evidence. An official investigation has been launched to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
Business Community Responds With Protest
In response to the attack, all car showroom owners in the area temporarily closed their businesses in protest. They highlighted the increasing risks faced by the business community due to extortion and criminal intimidation.
Aamir Chaudhry, president of the All Sindh Car Dealers Association, emphasised that car dealers play a vital role in Pakistan’s economy. He urged authorities to provide full protection and ensure a safe business environment.
Authorities Urged to Protect Businesses
Chaudhry further stressed that curbing extortion and safeguarding the business sector is a key responsibility of the government. He called for stricter security measures and swift action against criminal networks targeting legitimate businesses.
Experts say that rising extortion threats could undermine investor confidence and disrupt economic activities if not addressed promptly. Therefore, authorities are encouraged to adopt preventive measures and strengthen law enforcement in vulnerable commercial areas.
Impact on Local Economy and Public Safety
The incident highlights the risks faced by Karachi’s business community and underlines the need for comprehensive security strategies. It also raises concerns about the safety of employees, customers, and residents near commercial districts.
Meanwhile, affected car dealers continue to demand immediate intervention and assurances from local law enforcement. The incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges posed by criminal extortion in urban centers.
The police investigation is ongoing, and officials have promised updates on progress. Showroom owners hope that swift action will deter future attacks and protect businesses critical to Pakistan’s economy.
