Grand Theft Auto VI is finally less than a year away, and new developments suggest the game may be playable on more than just Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 at launch. Despite years of delays, anticipation continues to soar for what is widely considered the most awaited video game release of all time.
Originally expected in 2025, GTA 6 was pushed to 26 May 2026 and later delayed again to 19 November 2026. The game will follow Jason and Lucia, a criminal duo navigating love, betrayal, and chaos across a modernised Vice City and surrounding regions.
Rockstar Update Hints at Handheld Play
A recent Rockstar Games Launcher Update — version 1.0.105.2705 — has sparked excitement among players. The update notes “improvements have been made to support handheld gaming on Windows PCs.”
This enhancement could allow gamers to enjoy the Grand Theft Auto series on handheld Windows-based devices such as the Xbox ROG Ally, expanding GTA 6’s accessibility beyond traditional consoles.
The update has just launched, so performance results for older GTA titles on the ROG Ally are still unknown. However, if testing goes well, there is little reason to believe GTA 6 wouldn’t also be playable on the handheld at release — unless the game’s demands exceed the device’s capabilities.
Tech reviewers have praised the ROG Ally X for offering PC-level power in a portable form. Its ability to run an extensive Xbox library makes it an attractive option for gamers wanting high-end titles on the go.
Although Rockstar has not officially confirmed GTA 6 compatibility for handheld PCs, the new launcher update gives fans renewed hope that they may be able to carry Vice City in their backpacks on day one.
Industry Concerns Rise as Dan Houser Issues Warning
While excitement grows around GTA 6, viral rumours of cancellation have surfaced because of multiple delays and development challenges.
Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser, who left the company in 2020, recently voiced concerns about the gaming industry becoming “overly focused on making money.” His comments, made during a promotional interview for his new novel, fueled speculation about the future of big-budget games.
However, Houser did not specifically mention Rockstar or GTA 6. If anything, the years-long development and multiple delays suggest Rockstar is prioritising quality rather than rushing for profits.
Some of the worry stems from a turbulent timeline:
-
Feb 2022: GTA 6 officially announced
-
Dec 2023: First trailer released, promising a 2025 debut
-
May 2025: Release delayed to May 2026
-
Nov 2025: Release delayed again to November 19, 2026
The 18-year gap since GTA V and recent layoffs at Rockstar have further heightened community anxiety. But industry insiders maintain that GTA 6 is not in danger — development continues, and all signs indicate a late-2026 launch.
With improved handheld support, new hardware options, and ongoing development, GTA 6 is shaping up to be a milestone release that players may finally enjoy across multiple platforms.
If performance optimization goes as hoped, fans might experience Vice City’s chaos not just on consoles — but also in the palm of their hand.
