Tensions erupted during Real Madrid’s 1-0 Champions League playoff victory over Benfica as Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr accused Gianluca Prestianni of making a racist remark. Mbappe has called for the Argentine winger to be banned from Europe’s top competition.
The incident occurred shortly after Vinicius Jr scored to give Real Madrid the lead five minutes into the second half. Television footage showed Prestianni covering his mouth with his shirt before making a comment. Vinicius and nearby teammates interpreted it as a racial slur.
Referee Francois Letexier stopped the match for 11 minutes, activating FIFA’s anti-racism protocols. Mbappe confronted Prestianni on the pitch, calling him “a bloody racist,” expressing visible outrage.
Although the match resumed without further interruptions, both Vinicius Jr and Mbappe were booed by the home fans whenever they touched the ball.
Prestianni Denies Allegations
Prestianni took to social media to deny the accusations. He insisted that Vinicius Jr had misheard his words.
“At no time did I direct racist insults to Vinicius Jr, who unfortunately misunderstood,” Prestianni wrote. “I was never racist and regret the threats I received from Real Madrid players.”
Mbappe Demands Action
Mbappe told reporters he heard the same comment directed at Vinicius multiple times. His concerns echoed those raised by Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni.
“We cannot accept that a player in Europe’s top football competition behaves like this,” Mbappe said. “He doesn’t deserve to play in the Champions League anymore.”
He added, “We have to set an example for the children watching at home. This behaviour is unacceptable because the world is watching.”
When asked if Prestianni had apologized, Mbappe responded with a laugh. “Of course not,” he said.
Vinicius Jr Speaks Out
Vinicius Jr also addressed the incident on social media. He criticized the cowardice behind racist behaviour.
“Racists are, above all, cowards. They cover their mouth with a shirt to hide their weakness,” Vinicius wrote. “They have protection from others who should punish them. This is not new for me or my family.”
The Brazilian winger has faced repeated racist abuse in Spain. Since 2022, he has filed 18 legal complaints regarding such incidents.
Next Clash: Real Madrid vs Benfica
Real Madrid and Benfica will meet again for the second leg next Wednesday at the Bernabeu. Fans and players will closely monitor whether UEFA takes disciplinary action against Prestianni before the return fixture. The upcoming match is expected to attract intense scrutiny due to the controversy.
