Resolution Reaffirms Sindh’s Unity and Territorial Integrity
The Sindh Assembly on Saturday unanimously advanced a resolution rejecting any move to divide Sindh or carve out Karachi as a separate province. The session witnessed heated speeches and strong political reactions from lawmakers across party lines.
The resolution reaffirmed the unity and territorial integrity of Sindh. It declared that Sindh is not merely an administrative unit but one of the world’s oldest living civilisations. Lawmakers stressed that the province’s historical roots trace back thousands of years.
Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah tabled the resolution in the House. He described Sindh as a land with a unique identity, language and culture that predates modern political boundaries. He said the province’s continuity reflects a deep and historic civilisational legacy.
The resolution made clear that any attempt to divide Sindh would be rejected. It strongly condemned proposals suggesting Karachi be declared a separate province.
Historical and Constitutional References Cited
The resolution highlighted Sindh’s connection to the Indus Valley Civilisation. It specifically referenced Mohenjo-daro as evidence of Sindh’s ancient heritage. Lawmakers said these historic foundations reinforce the province’s unique identity.
The House also recalled Sindh’s separation from the Bombay Presidency in 1936. It mentioned the historic passage of the Pakistan Resolution by the Sindh Assembly on March 3, 1943. Members said Sindh played a foundational role in the creation of Pakistan.
Citing Article 239 of the Constitution, the resolution stated that any change in provincial boundaries requires a two-thirds majority in parliament. Lawmakers argued that altering Sindh’s borders without constitutional backing would violate democratic principles.
The document asserted that proposals to divide Sindh are contrary to history, the Constitution and democratic norms. It urged all political actors to respect constitutional procedures.
Debate Highlights Political Divisions
During his address, the chief minister said the resolution was not directed at any individual or political party. He said the goal was to safeguard Sindh’s unity. He added that Sindh continues to contribute significantly to Pakistan’s federation.
Several lawmakers supported the resolution. They stressed that Karachi is an inseparable part of Sindh. They described Karachi as the province’s economic lifeline and a symbol of diversity and unity.
However, some members questioned the timing of the resolution. They asked whether the debate diverted attention from governance challenges in urban areas. They urged the government to focus on performance and service delivery in Karachi.
Despite differences in tone, the House unanimously advanced the resolution. It resolved to defend Sindh’s geographical integrity and constitutional status through democratic means. Lawmakers appealed to political forces to avoid divisive narratives.
The session concluded with a strong message. Sindh’s unity, identity and constitutional position will remain protected under law.
