ISLAMABAD: The federal government has sought the immediate deployment of the military in four provinces to support the local authorities to carry out flood relief operations.
So far, floods and rains have displaced 1.5 million people across the country while death toll has surpassed 1,000.
Pakistan army is being summoned under Article 245 of the Constitution.
Under Article 245 the armed forces are required to “act in aid of civil power when called upon to do so.”
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has also declared an emergency amid flood threats in Swat and other cities.
The provincial governments of Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan had sent requisitions to the federal interior ministry for military deployment.
Earlier, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah said that the military is being deployed to all the flood-hit areas of four provinces to overcome devastation of rains and floods and rescue affected people.
The Pakistan Army has already been aiding rescue and relief efforts in different parts of the country. Now, a large-scale deployment is expected.
A day earlier, Prime Minister announced Rs 15 billion grant for Sindh province when he visited flood-ravaged areas in Sukkur region.
