CIA chief William Burns is in Ankara, the capital city of Turkiye to convey a message to his Russian intelligence counterpart regarding the consequences of use of nuclear weapons by Russia in Ukraine, a White House official said.
A secret meeting of the spy chiefs of the United States and Russia has been hosted by the Turkish intelligence agency.
Media reports said that CIA Director Bill Burns and his Russian intelligence counterpart Sergey Naryshkin held a meeting in Ankara being guests of the Turkish National Intelligence Organization (MIT).
Russia has confirmed the meeting and said it took place at the request of the US.
A White House National Security Council official, seeking anonymity Turkish news agency Anadolu Agency communication channels with Russia are open in particular the risks of a nuclear attack and strategic stability.
“CIA Director Bill Burns is in Ankara to meet with his Russian intelligence counterpart. Neither he is conducting negotiations of any kind nor discussing settlement of the war in Ukraine. He is conveying a message on the consequences of the use of nuclear weapons by Russia, and the risks of escalation to strategic stability,” the official said.
