The Nobel Peace Prize was announced for Narges Mohammadi, Irani women rights advocate, who is currently incarcerated. The award is in recognition of her tireless efforts to combat the oppression of women in Iran.
Berit Reiss-Andersen, the head of the Norwegian Nobel Committee in Oslo, stated that Narges Mohammadi was honored “for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran. She dedicated advocacy for human rights and freedom for all.”
Narges Mohammadi has faced numerous periods of imprisonment over the past two decades. Narges opposes compulsory wearing of the hijab by women and death penalty.
She holds the position of vice-president at the Defenders of Human Rights Centre. It is an organization founded by Iranian human rights lawyer Shirin Ebadi. Shirin herself received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2003.
Reiss-Andersen highlighted the extraordinary personal sacrifices Mohammadi has made during her courageous struggle. She has been arrested by the Iranian regime 13 times. Narges has been convicted five times, and sentenced to a total of 31 years in prison along with 154 lashes.
Last year, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to a symbolic trio dedicated to opposing the war: the Russian human rights group Memorial, Ukraine’s Center for Civil Liberties, and imprisoned Belarusian rights advocate Ales Bialiatski.
The Nobel Peace Prize includes a gold medal, a diploma, and a monetary award of 11 million Swedish kronor ($1 million).
The official award ceremony is scheduled for December 10 in Oslo. It commemorates the anniversary of the 1896 passing of Alfred Nobel, the prize’s founder and a Swedish inventor and philanthropist.
Notably, the Nobel Peace Prize is the only Nobel Prize presented in Oslo, while the recipients in other disciplines are announced in Stockholm.
On Thursday, Norwegian playwright Jon Fosse, known for having his plays frequently staged worldwide, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. The Nobel season will conclude on Monday with the announcement of the Nobel economics prize.
