The Punjab government has reached out to China for assistance in addressing the severe smog crisis in Lahore, where the Air Quality Index (AQI) has exceeded 300, reaching hazardous levels.

Consequently, the government has implemented a partial lockdown in 10 districts to tackle the escalating pollution, with Lahore now ranking as the second most polluted city globally.
The surge in atmospheric pollution has resulted in a significant increase in respiratory and throat-related illnesses, prompting over 3,200 individuals to seek medical attention in government hospitals in the past 24 hours. Health Minister Dr. Jamal Naseer expressed concern about the rising respiratory illnesses and urged citizens to take necessary precautions to protect themselves.
In an effort to combat smog, the Punjab government has sought support from Chinese environmental experts, who are expected to visit the region soon to assess the situation and propose effective measures. Meanwhile, the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) is implementing innovative measures such as water spraying to mitigate air pollution and enhance overall air quality.
As part of the preventive measures, educational institutions in Lahore and the affected districts will remain closed, and markets will only be allowed to operate after 3:00 PM.
PTI Activist Khadija Shah Arrested Again For 30 Days Under The MPO Ordinance
Meanwhile, the Lahore deputy commissioner has extended the detention of fashion designer Khadija Shah for an additional 30 days under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) ordinance. This decision, aiming to uphold “law and order in the provincial capital,” was revealed recently.
DC Rafia Haider issued the directive following an anti-terrorism court’s grant of post-arrest bail to Shah in the fourth and latest case related to the May 9 riots. The decision to detain Shah was made on November 15.
Shah’s legal entanglement originates from her arrest during the nationwide turmoil on May 9, triggered by the apprehension of PTI Chairman Imran Khan. The resulting protests turned violent, involving assaults on military and state facilities.
On the same day, Shah shared videos on her social media, depicting her participation in the PTI protest outside the Jinnah House, the Lahore corps commander’s residence.
