Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has pledged to regain control of the Gaza Strip’s border with Egypt, expanding Israel’s efforts to counter Hamas in a conflict projected to endure for several months.
Netanyahu stated, “The war is at its peak,” referring to the fighting since Oct 7, when Hamas and its allies infiltrated Israel, resulting in casualties and hostage situations. He emphasized the necessity for the Philadelphi Corridor buffer zone along Gaza’s border with Egypt to be under Israeli control, potentially indicating a reversal of the 2005 Gaza withdrawal.
Netanyahu’s remarks coincided with ongoing Israeli military operations, aiming to last for “many more months.” The conflict, initiated by a surprise Hamas incursion in October, led to significant displacement and casualties among Gaza’s residents.
Reported fighting on Saturday focused on specific areas in central and southern Gaza. An Israeli strike reportedly killed Abdel-Fattah Maali, a senior Hamas member, raising tensions.
Israel claimed progress in destroying Hamas infrastructure, including tunnels and military facilities. Meanwhile, Hamas and Islamic Jihad asserted damaging Israeli tanks and troop carriers in Gaza, countering Israel’s objectives.
The conflict’s broader regional implications have raised concerns, with the involvement of Iran-backed groups in neighboring countries and potential impacts on international shipping.
Washington has urged Israel to shift to targeted operations against Hamas leaders, emphasizing concerns about civilian casualties. Israel remains committed to destroying Hamas, accusing the group of using civilians as human shields, a claim denied by Hamas.
