The Ministry of Interior has raised concerns about the escalating influence and activities of the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s merged districts. The withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan and the inaction of the interim Afghan government against the TTP have reportedly contributed to the group’s reorganization and operational expansion in 2022.
According to the ministry, the TTP has significantly increased its militant activities and is seeking support from other militant groups to enhance its strength and capabilities. The focus of its activities is mainly concentrated in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, especially the merged districts, with some presence in Balochistan, and attempts to activate its network throughout the country.
The influx of TTP members, along with recruitment, training, and the placement of suicide bombers, is identified as a cause for concern by the ministry. Additionally, the statement highlights Daesh’s (Islamic State) efforts to establish a foothold in Pakistan, targeting Shias and religious minority communities to incite sectarian strife.
Despite the completion of fencing along the western borders of Pakistan to curb illegal movement, the TTP continues to sabotage the fence. The ministry emphasizes the ongoing challenges posed by militant groups, particularly the TTP, despite security measures.
The text also mentions the deportation of illegal immigrants, with over 500,000 repatriated so far under the government’s deportation drive. The majority of illegal aliens in the country, around 1.7 million, are identified as Afghans living without proper documentation. Efforts are underway to identify and deport the remaining individuals.
In a separate incident, unidentified assailants shot dead six barbers in North Waziristan, highlighting the security challenges in the region. The victims, residents of Punjab’s Dera Ghazi Khan district, were found in agricultural fields after being abducted and executed.
Furthermore, an intelligence-based operation in North Waziristan resulted in the killing of four militants, including a suicide bomber. The militants were reportedly planning a high-profile terrorist attack, which was averted due to the proactive response by security forces. Arms, ammunition, and explosives were recovered during the operation.
