Amidst the escalating election fervor, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) has commenced its election campaign for the upcoming general elections, unveiling a manifesto that places ‘three constitutional amendments’ at its core.
During a press conference in Karachi, the party’s top leaders announced their manifesto, signaling their readiness for the February 8 general polls. Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, the party convener, asserted that the nation has lacked constitutional protection for the past 50 years. He emphasized the necessity of amending the Constitution to empower the common man and strengthen the country.
Dr. Siddiqui highlighted three proposed constitutional amendments aimed at providing legal coverage to municipal, city, and district-level governments. The party aims to secure full legal protection for all local governments by enshrining their institutions in the Constitution, rejecting the prospect of a powerless democracy.
In addition to constitutional amendments, Dr. Farooq Sattar, a senior deputy convener, announced a draft bill encompassing all state institutions. He advocated for the establishment of a just taxation system, ensuring equal tax contributions from both the affluent and the less privileged. Dr. Sattar also pledged to initiate a four-year project to address water scarcity in Karachi.
Senior deputy convener Mustafa Kamal emphasized that the MQM-P’s manifesto transcends being a mere compilation of documents addressing the country’s core issues. Instead, it presents practical solutions to tackle political and economic crises by fortifying true democracy in the nation.
