Get ready, electricity consumers, as your February bills are set to deliver yet another financial blow.
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has issued an initial recommendation to increase the electricity price by a significant Rs5.62 per unit, based on December’s fuel price adjustment. The meeting, chaired by NEPRA Chairman Waseem Mukhtiar, paved the way for this decision.
This implies an estimated additional burden of Rs42 billion on consumers nationwide in February, attributed to the monthly fuel adjustment. The decision follows a hearing on the Central Power Purchasing Agency’s (CPPA) request, seeking the price hike to offset the rising fuel costs.
According to CPPA, the reference fuel price for December was set at Rs5.40 per unit, significantly higher than the average cost per unit of Rs11 in December. While NEPRA has granted preliminary approval to CPPA’s request, a final decision is pending further data analysis.
This potential increase in prices adds to a series of recent hikes, placing additional strain on household budgets and fueling public concerns about the affordability of electricity.
The eagerly awaited final decision from NEPRA is expected soon, holding significant implications for millions of electricity consumers throughout Pakistan. As consumers brace themselves for the impact on their wallets, the unfolding situation prompts a broader discussion about the challenges and sustainability of the current energy pricing model. Stay tuned for updates as the situation develops, and households grapple with the repercussions of these changes in the coming months.
