PESHAWAR/ISLAMABAD: On Thursday, the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) released a compilation of political figures who have been threatened in anticipation of the upcoming general elections in 2024.
The Counter Terrorism Department identified 15 politicians in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) who have received threats from terrorist entities. The list includes:
- MNA Mohsin Dawar
- Ex-provincial minister Imtiaz Qureshi
- Senator Hidayatullah
- Former PML-N MNA Ameer Maqam
- Former PTI MNA Pir Mansoor Shah and Shah Muhammad
- JUI-F’s Malik Adnan Wazir and Ehsanullah
- Senator Bakhti Afsar
- Senator Maulana Abdur Rasheed
The CTD spokesperson informed that the respective police officials in the concerned districts have been notified about the threats and instructed to enhance the security measures for the mentioned politicians.
In related incidents, three violent events in Balochistan’s Sibi, Quetta, and Chaman, as well as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Bajaur district, resulted in six fatalities and 13 injuries within a single day.
The violence initiated in Sibi, where a blast near a political party’s rally on Jinnah Road claimed four lives and injured five others. Authorities have secured the area and called in the bomb disposal squad.
Against this backdrop, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has categorized approximately 50% of polling stations across the country as ‘sensitive’ or ‘most sensitive.’
Out of the total 90,675 polling stations, 46,065 have been designated as such, according to ECP sources.
