In the midst of significant political uncertainty and polarization, Asif Ali Zardari, Co-Chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), has extended an invitation to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), founded by Imran Khan, to engage in political reconciliation ahead of the formation of the new federal government.
Emphasizing the importance of political reconciliation at a multi-party news conference in Islamabad, Zardari, accompanied by former Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) leaders such as PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif, MQM-P Convener Dr. Khalid Maqool Siddiqui, PML-Q Chief Chaudhry Shujaat, and Istehkam-e-Party (IPP) President Abdul Aleem Khan, highlighted the necessity for the PTI to participate in the reconciliation process. Zardari stressed the need for everyone to align on the ‘economic agenda’ for the broader interest of the nation.
This development follows PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari’s announcement during a press conference in the capital, where he declared the withdrawal of his party’s candidacy for the prime minister’s position, indicating support for the PML-N’s candidate for the country’s chief executive role.
Pakistan’s political landscape has been marked by uncertainty following the February 8 general elections, during which none of the parties, including the PPP, PML-N, and PTI, secured a simple majority in the National Assembly.
Efforts have been underway by major political stakeholders to garner support from independent candidates and forge alliances to reach the necessary 169 seats in the 336-member lower house of parliament. The PTI-backed candidates emerged as the largest group, winning more than 90 NA seats, followed by the PML-N and PPP with 75 and 54 seats, respectively.
Zardari announced the decision to form a coalition government aimed at addressing the prevailing crises facing the country. He stressed the importance of setting aside differences to move the nation forward and rebuild the economy.
Shehbaz Sharif, nominated for the prime minister’s post following consensus among coalition partners, emphasized mutual respect for each other’s mandates post-elections. He highlighted the need for a “charter of the economy” and urged political stakeholders to prioritize national interests over political differences.
The coalition partners also discussed the decision-making process for the president’s slot and emphasized the significance of coordinated steps in forming the next government.
In response to queries about the absence of JUI-F supremo Maulana Fazlur Rehman, Shehbaz stated that efforts were made to include him but he was chairing his party’s shura session.
The coalition partners reiterated their commitment to stabilizing the country’s democracy and prioritizing the economic agenda amid challenging economic indicators.
Ahsan Iqbal of the PML-N expressed hope for PPP’s inclusion in the next federal cabinet, following Bilawal’s announcement of support for the PML-N candidate for prime minister. Ahsan emphasized the need for partners to share the burden collectively.
He also commented on the PTI’s provincial stronghold and expressed confidence in the leadership of Maryam Nawaz in Punjab, highlighting the party’s determination to address the country’s challenges under Nawaz Sharif’s leadership.
