Today marks a pivotal day in Pakistani politics as the assemblies of Punjab and Sindh are poised to elect chief ministers who will guide their respective provinces for the next half-decade.
In the Punjab Assembly, the session is slated to kick off at 11 am, featuring a hotly contested race between Maryam Nawaz of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Rana Aftab of the Sunni Ittehad Council for the chief minister’s role. Meanwhile, in Sindh, the Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) Murad Ali Shah is set to compete against Ali Khurshidi, the candidate put forth by the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), all against the backdrop of a boycott by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI).
The dynamics in the Punjab Assembly are intriguing, with 327 seats in play. The PML-N asserts support from 224 lawmakers, while the Sunni Ittehad Council claims the backing of 103 MPAs. Securing 186 votes is the threshold for a candidate to ascend to the position of Leader of the House.
To facilitate the transportation of lawmakers to the assembly, six buses have been arranged, with PML-N MPs accommodated in four buses, and PML-Q, PPP, Independents, and PML-Z lawmakers, along with a designated bus for women MPs.
During the polling process, the House will be divided into two sides corresponding to each candidate. Lawmakers advocating for their preferred candidates will exit through the speaker’s gate. The conclusion of voting will be signaled by ringing bells, prompting members to return to their seats. The candidate amassing the majority of votes will be declared the victor.
Post-election, the speaker will inform the governor, triggering arrangements for the swearing-in ceremony. Notably, the nomination papers of Maryam Nawaz and Rana Aftab were accepted following a thorough review by Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Ahmed Khan.
In contrast, the PTI and JI members have announced a boycott of the CM election proceedings. The Sindh CM’s polling is scheduled for 2 pm today, as announced by Sindh Assembly Speaker Owais Qadir Shah. Ghulam Qadir Chandio, Saleh Shah, and Naeem Kharal submitted the nomination papers on behalf of Murad Ali Shah.
