ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has initiated legal action by serving notices to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting regarding the suspension of social media platform X (Twitter) within the country.
Chief Justice of the Islamabad High Court, Justice Aamer Farooq, addressed the plea against the suspension of X.
Upon inquiry, the applicant’s legal representative informed the IHC Chief Justice that X services have been suspended in Pakistan since February 17.
Additionally, the lawyer highlighted that the Sindh High Court (SHC) is concurrently examining a contempt case related to the matter.
Subsequently, the IHC adjourned the hearing for a week following the issuance of notices to the PTA and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
It’s worth noting that the Sindh High Court (SHC) had previously instructed the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) to reinstate social media platform X services across Pakistan.
Despite these directives, social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, remains inaccessible to users in Pakistan.
Reports of outages began surfacing on Saturday, with NetBlocks, an organization monitoring internet accessibility, confirming a “national-scale disruption” affecting X in Pakistan on February 17.
This disruption occurred amidst widespread protests across the country, sparked by allegations of vote rigging in general elections.
