Thanks to the remarkable surgical expertise of a team of surgeons in Delhi and the generous organ donation commitment of a woman, four lives are set to undergo a transformative change. Tomorrow, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital will discharge a 45-year-old patient, marking the success of Delhi’s first-ever double hand transplant. In a tragic train accident in 2020, the patient lost both hands, leaving him distraught, especially given his humble background.
However, fate took a positive turn. The 45-year-old found salvation through the hands of Meena Mehta, the former head of administration at a renowned South Delhi school, who had been declared brain dead. Ms. Mehta had pledged her organs for utilization after her demise. Her kidneys, liver, and corneas have already brought newfound life to three other individuals, and now, her hands have bestowed fresh hope upon a painter who had suffered a devastating setback.
This extraordinary feat wouldn’t have been achievable without the relentless efforts of the dedicated team of doctors. The intricate procedure, spanning over 12 hours, involved meticulously connecting the recipient’s arms to the donor’s hands, encompassing muscles, tendons, and arteries. The team’s commitment bore fruit, culminating in a poignant moment captured in a photograph where the group of medical professionals stood alongside the painter, who, having regained his hands, offered a double thumbs up in gratitude.
