The Sindh government has unveiled plans to implement a prepaid payment system for the Peoples Bus Service in Karachi starting from next month.
During a press conference in Karachi, Sindh Transport Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon disclosed that the provincial government would initiate the prepaid payment system from April 18, gradually phasing out cash payments for fares. Additionally, he announced the expansion of the Peoples Bus Service with the introduction of two new routes in Karachi following Eid, along with the launch of the same service in Mirpurkhas next month.
Memon also hinted at the procurement of 500 additional buses in the near future, which would be incorporated into the fleet of the Peoples Bus Service. He emphasized that an automated fare collection system would be implemented on the routes of the People’s Bus Service in Karachi starting April 18. Passengers will be provided with prepaid cards that can be utilized across all service routes, including the BRTs Green Line and Orange Line.
The minister stated, “From April 18, this automated system is being introduced for Route-1 and Route-9,” and affirmed that the new card system would be applicable to all public transport schemes, including the Green Line, Orange Line, and forthcoming BRT projects.
Regarding another BRT project, Memon disclosed plans to commence the groundbreaking of BRT Yellow Line post-Eid. He mentioned that the initial phase would involve the reconstruction of Jam Sadiq Bridge in Korangi as part of the project.
