The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has announced a firm stance against members of the National and provincial assemblies who have shifted their allegiances. More than 20 lawmakers who have switched sides will face repercussions as the party plans to file references against them.
Malik Ahmad Bhachar, the opposition leader in the Punjab Assembly representing the Sunni Ittehad Council, stressed the critical importance of upholding political integrity and staying true to party principles. He argued that such shifts in allegiance not only disrupt the democratic process but also betray the essence of genuine representation.
These references are set to be formally lodged with the speakers of the respective assemblies. Bhachar asserted that if the speakers fail to act on these references promptly, the matter will be escalated to the judiciary for necessary intervention.
“We have initiated an inquiry to uncover those involved in opportunistic political maneuvers through defection,” declared the opposition leader, emphasizing the commitment to expose such behavior.
The decision to take stringent action against turncoat lawmakers is grounded in the constitutional principles delineated in articles 62 and 63. These constitutional provisions outline the qualifications and disqualifications for members of the National and provincial assemblies, barring those who switch loyalties from holding office.
In accordance with Bhachar’s stance, individuals who engage in such disloyal acts are deemed ineligible for assembly membership under these constitutional guidelines.
