The federal government of Pakistan has taken decisive steps towards expediting the outsourcing of major airports and the privatization of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA). According to a report, a committee has been established to oversee and accelerate these crucial processes.
Chaired by Federal Minister of Defense and Aviation, Khawaja Asif Ahmad, the committee boasts the participation of prominent figures including Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Federal Minister of Privatization Aleem Khan.
Additionally, key officials such as the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, the Secretary of Privatization, and the Secretary of Aviation are also members. The Aviation Division has been tasked with providing essential secretarial support to the Committee, as outlined in the official notification.
The primary objectives of this committee revolve around reviewing the outsourcing of management for major airports across Pakistan and monitoring matters pertaining to the privatization of PIA. The government’s proactive stance underscores its commitment to streamlining these critical sectors, aligning with broader economic goals.
Already, significant strides have been made with the initiation of the process to delegate the operations and management of key airports including those in Karachi, Islamabad, and Lahore. This strategic move aims to leverage external expertise while generating foreign exchange to bolster the nation’s economy.
Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb has underscored the government’s dedication to completing the privatization process of PIA by June, signaling a clear timeline for these transformative endeavors.
In light of ongoing economic challenges and the need for sustainable growth, these initiatives represent pivotal efforts by the government to enhance efficiency, transparency, and competitiveness in both the aviation industry and state-owned enterprises.
