In the latest State Department briefing, spokesperson Mathew Miller refrained from confirming assertions that the United States is actively involved in securing the release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who is presently detained. Miller stressed that the United States would not take a stance on the matter.
Miller was prompted to address reports suggesting U.S. collaboration with Pakistani authorities to secure Imran Khan’s release.
This query emerged following a prior statement from the State Department expressing concern for the safety of all detainees, including Imran Khan.
Additionally, amidst growing apprehensions regarding the treatment of Afghan refugees in Pakistan, Miller urged Islamabad to reconsider the deportation of Afghan nationals, encompassing journalists, students, and individuals born in Pakistan.
He emphasized the necessity of ensuring their safety and smooth resettlement, underlining ongoing dialogue with Pakistani authorities regarding U.S. resettlement and immigration avenues.
Responding to inquiries concerning recent reports linking the banned Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP) to suicide attacks, notably the tragic killing of five Chinese engineers, Miller reiterated the United States’ commitment to collaborating with Pakistan in addressing the mutual threat posed by terrorist organizations in the region.
Miller’s briefing excerpt underscored the State Department’s neutrality on matters pertaining to Imran Khan’s detention, reaffirming the stance that such decisions rest with the Pakistani government.
Regarding security concerns in Pakistan, the Department expressed condolences for past losses due to terrorism while emphasizing the ongoing collaboration with Pakistan to counter terrorist threats.
