ISLAMABAD: On Thursday, the administration of Adiala Jail declined to transfer Bushra Bibi, prompting the Superintendent of Adiala Jail to submit a report to the court of Justice Mian Gul Hasan, who presided over Bushra Bibi’s petition.
Representing Bushra Bibi, Advocate Usman Gul appeared in court.
The jail superintendent cited security concerns and lack of space as reasons for being unable to transfer Bushra Bibi, with 250 female prisoners already housed in the jail.
The Islamabad Chief Commissioner has yet to provide a response.
The prosecutor requested additional time to submit a reply, which the court granted, adjourning the hearing for two weeks.
In a separate development, Bushra Bibi, the wife of Imran Khan, was arrested by the women’s police from Adiala Jail in connection with the Toshkahana reference case.
In December 2023, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) issued a final call-up notice to Bushra Bibi, summoning her to appear before the Rawalpindi office in Islamabad on December 11 concerning the Toshakhana case.
The notice alleges that during Imran Khan’s tenure as prime minister, Bushra Bibi received and retained gifts from foreign dignitaries worth millions of rupees, violating established procedures.
According to NAB, she retained various items over the years, failing to deposit them in the Toshakhana as required by law.
The anti-graft body has requested Bushra Bibi’s appearance to answer questions and provide clarifications on the matter.
Bushra Bibi is reported to be the first niqab-wearing spouse of a Pakistani Prime Minister and has expressed confidence in Imran Khan’s ability to fulfill promises and improve Pakistan’s welfare. She has described Imran Khan as an “extremely simple man.”
