Australian cricketer Mitchell Marsh is facing controversy after being photographed placing his foot on the ICC Men’s World Cup 2023 trophy following his team’s victory over India on November 19.
An FIR was filed against Marsh on November 24 in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, based on a complaint from activist Pandit Keshav. Keshav alleges that Marsh’s actions, seen as disrespectful by many, have hurt the sentiments of Indian cricket team supporters.
Pandit Keshav has sent a copy of the complaint to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging that Marsh should not be allowed to play cricket in India. The incident sparked a strong reaction on social media, with users condemning Marsh for what they perceive as a lack of respect for the game and the prestigious trophy.
Mohammed Shami, the highest wicket-taker in the ICC World Cup 2023 with 24 wickets, expressed his displeasure with Marsh’s actions. In an interview with an Indian news channel, Shami stated, “It did not please me to see someone place a foot on the trophy that represents the pinnacle of global competition and is meant to be held high in honor.”
Australia secured the World Cup trophy by successfully chasing a target of 241 runs against India, winning the match by six wickets. Mitchell Marsh contributed significantly to Australia’s victory, claiming three wickets, while Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood each took two. Glenn Maxwell and Adam Zampa also contributed with one wicket each.
