Former Skipper Returns After ICC Ban; Both Sides Make Key Changes
In a moment that marks one of the most remarkable comebacks in international cricket, Zimbabwe’s former captain and batting stalwart Brendan Taylor has returned to the national side at the age of 39. Taylor was named in Zimbabwe’s playing XI for the second Test against New Zealand in Bulawayo, just days after completing a three-and-a-half-year ban for violating the ICC’s anti-corruption code in 2021.
Taylor’s suspension officially ended on July 25, 2025, and less than a week later, he was recalled to Zimbabwe’s Test squad. His inclusion in the second Test represents not just a personal redemption but also a much-needed boost for a Zimbabwean side that has struggled for consistency in recent years.
Taylor Returns at the Top of the Order
Despite being most successful at No. 4, Taylor was asked to open the batting alongside Brian Bennett. This decision meant Ben Curran, who recently recovered from a broken hand, was left out. Zimbabwe’s middle order remains strong, featuring experienced players Sean Williams, Craig Ervine (captain), and Sikandar Raza, giving Taylor the tough task of facing New Zealand’s new-ball attack.
Zimbabwe made one other change to their XI from the first Test loss. Young seamer Newman Nyamhuri was dropped, and Trevor Gwandu was brought in to play his third Test match.
New Zealand Field Injury-Hit Bowling Attack
On the other side, New Zealand, who lead the two-match series 1-0, were forced to make several changes due to a string of injuries. Nathan Smith and Will O’Rourke were ruled out, while Michael Bracewell is currently participating in The Hundred in England.
This gave the Black Caps a chance to hand Test debuts to three bowlers: Jacob Duffy, Matthew Fisher, and Zakary Foulkes. Despite their bowling shuffle, the batting unit remained unchanged. With Tom Latham still nursing a shoulder injury, Mitchell Santner continues as stand-in captain.
Zimbabwe Aim to Break Long-standing Drought in Bulawayo
Zimbabwe are under pressure to level the series after losing the first Test. They haven’t won a Test match at home in 2025 and haven’t secured a victory in Bulawayo since 2001 — a drought spanning over two decades.
With Taylor’s dramatic return, a refreshed bowling attack, and the leadership of Ervine, Zimbabwe will be hoping to rewrite their home Test record and deliver a performance worthy of their supporters’ hopes.
