LAHORE – Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved a Rs5,000 per acre subsidy under the wheat support programme for 600,000 farmers, aiming to boost agricultural productivity and ease input costs across the province.
The subsidy will be disbursed through the Kisan Card system. However, farmers without Kisan Cards will also be eligible to receive the same amount per acre, ensuring broader access to the support initiative.
The decision was made during a high-level meeting chaired by CM Maryam Nawaz in Lahore, where strategies were discussed for the solarisation of agricultural tube wells and the effective implementation of the wheat support programme. The inclusion of land contractors—in addition to landowners—under the subsidy scheme was also reviewed.
Officials briefed the chief minister that half of all applications submitted for the wheat support programme have already been verified. Maryam Nawaz directed authorities to ensure support reaches all eligible farmers, regardless of their registration status with the Kisan Card.
Highlighting the scale of agricultural financing in the province, she revealed that farmers have already utilised Rs36 billion in loans for agricultural inputs through the Kisan Card. Notably, Rs22 billion of these loans have been repaid, marking a 60% repayment rate.
She also confirmed that the second instalment for the upcoming crop cycle has been released, further reinforcing the government’s commitment to empowering the farming community.
“Billions more will be distributed in subsidies for the next crop. We are ensuring no farmer is left behind,” said Maryam Nawaz.
