ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) issued updated party positions for the National and provincial assemblies, formally declaring all members of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) as independents.
According to the official notification, all lawmakers backed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and previously listed under the SIC will now be treated as independent members in legislative records.
ECP Acts on Supreme Court Verdict
The move follows the Supreme Court’s decision dated August 25, 2025, which directed the ECP to reconsider the SIC’s parliamentary status. Acting on the verdict, the Commission de-notified the SIC’s collective representation, effectively dissolving its standing in the assemblies.
Officials confirmed that the updated composition has been reflected in the official records, marking a significant change in the country’s parliamentary alignment. The ECP stated that the revision applies to the National Assembly and the provincial assemblies of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Sindh.
Major Shift in Political Landscape
With the implementation of the new notification, members formerly associated with PTI or SIC are no longer recognized under any party affiliation. This development has altered the balance of power in both the federal and provincial legislatures.
Political analysts view the ECP’s decision as a pivotal moment in Pakistan’s political landscape, as it leaves dozens of lawmakers without official party representation. Observers believe the ruling may also influence future coalition-building efforts and parliamentary proceedings.
