Representatives from 10 European countries and EU officials have issued a joint statement urging law enforcement agencies to spare no effort in protecting Muslims amidst a surge in hate crimes against them, according to the reports.
The statement acknowledges an increased number of hate crimes targeting Muslim and Jewish communities across Europe in recent months, with both groups facing physical and verbal attacks, leading to heightened feelings of insecurity and threat, both online and offline.
The EU members expressed deep concern for Muslims, emphasizing that unaddressed phenomena like Islamophobia could jeopardize social cohesion and expose vulnerable communities to further harm. The statement calls on national authorities to ensure the safety of Muslims in various settings, including places of worship, workplaces, schools, and homes. Additionally, it urges public safety and law enforcement agencies to remain vigilant in detecting and addressing incidents of hate crimes and hate-motivated violence against Muslims.
While the EU statement does not explicitly mention the conflict in the Middle East, it alludes to the “current geopolitical context.”
Muslim communities have recently voiced concerns over increasing hostilities, with reported attacks in the United Kingdom. The French Muslim Council received 42 threatening letters in October. German politician Jian Omar, of Kurdish-Syrian background, felt vulnerable after being assaulted with a hammer and receiving hate-filled flyers mixed with glass and feces. these incidents highlight the rising hostilities faced by Muslim communities.
Despite ongoing investigations into such cases, authorities, as reported , express limitations in increasing security measures. Brussels-based analyst Shada Islam sees the EU statement as a small yet essential step in combatting racism across Europe. Human Rights Watch had previously expressed deep concern over the escalating antisemitism and anti-Muslim hatred in Europe.
