ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister of PML-N Shahid Khaqan Abbasi is appearing before the Commission probing the Faizabad sit-in today.
Abbasi will record his statement about the facts surrounding the Faizabad sit-in when Nawaz Sharif was the prime minister of Pakistan.
Meanwhile, Arif Nawaz, former Punjab police chief, missed his second summons by the commission investigating the 2017 Tehreek-i-Labbaik sit-in at Faizabad.
The three-member panel had also called for former Islamabad police chief Sultan Azam Temuri and former Rawalpindi division commissioner Nadeem Aslam Chaudhary.
Nawaz mentioned his commitments to the Federal Public Service Commission interviews as the reason for his absence.
Temuri and Chaudhary did show up before the commission at the Interior Ministry’s office, providing their statements during the session.
Temuri clarified that during the TLP sit-in period from October 24 to November 27, 2017, he was the Gujranwala regional police officer, not the capital’s police chief until December 8, 2017.
He noted that the police’s actions during the sit-in were in compliance with the government’s directives and its agreement with TLP.
He suggested creating a specialized anti-riot force, preparing contingency plans, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and ensuring readiness to manage such demonstrations.
The commission inquired about the preparations made and actions taken during the sit-in. Temuri faced questions regarding the failure to intercept the protesters en route to Islamabad and those supporting the TLP during the sit-in.
Following the statements of these former officials, the commission adjourned until Wednesday (today).
