GILGIT: In the wake of devastating flash floods that have struck multiple parts of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), Chief Minister Gulbar Khan has called on the federal government to provide urgent financial assistance amounting to Rs7 billion. The funds are needed to repair critical infrastructure, restore essential services, and support the affected communities.
Speaking at a press conference, CM Gulbar Khan highlighted the scale of destruction, noting that seven districts in the region have suffered significant damage. “Diamer is among the worst-hit areas. Entire communities have been cut off, and critical infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and power projects, has collapsed,” he stated.
According to the chief minister, the estimated cost of the damage caused by the floods exceeds Rs20 billion, far beyond the financial capacity of the provincial government. “Our resources are extremely limited, and we need immediate support from the centre to initiate rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts,” he added.
Urgent Need for Reconstruction and Humanitarian Support
The GB chief minister also reported that 10 people have lost their lives, while four others have been injured due to the flooding. He emphasized the urgency of rebuilding power infrastructure and reconnecting flood-isolated regions, which are currently facing acute water shortages and power outages.
He urged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to visit the flood-stricken areas personally to assess the situation and ensure federal support is expedited. “We are facing a humanitarian and developmental crisis. Immediate action is necessary to prevent further suffering,” CM Gulbar Khan warned.
The plea comes as local authorities work to provide emergency relief in remote mountainous regions, where access remains difficult due to landslides and washed-out roads. The provincial government continues to assess damage and coordinate with national agencies for relief operations.
