Pakistan and international leaders expressed deep sorrow over the loss of more than 240 lives following a devastating Air India plane crash near Ahmedabad on Thursday.
The tragedy occurred shortly after Flight AI171 took off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. Bound for London’s Gatwick Airport, the aircraft crashed into a medical college hostel situated in a residential area just outside the airport perimeter during lunchtime. All 242 people on board are feared dead, with no survivors reported so far.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif offered his condolences, saying, “Saddened by the tragic crash of Air India flight near Ahmedabad today. We extend our condolences to the families of the victims grieving this immense loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this heartbreaking tragedy.”
Defence Minister Khawaja Asif also expressed his grief, stating, “We are deeply saddened by the tragic crash of Flight AI171. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families and loved ones of all aboard. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected.”
PPP Chairman and former Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari shared his sympathies, noting, “Saddened to hear of the tragic incident near Ahmedabad, where an Air India flight carrying approximately 240 passengers crashed shortly after takeoff. I express my profound condolences to the people of India.”
PML-N leader and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif also extended condolences, saying, “My heartfelt condolences to the families of the precious lives lost in the tragic Air India plane crash. This devastating loss transcends borders and reminds us of our shared humanity. My deepest sympathies to Prime Minister Modi and the people of India.”
A spokesperson for Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) echoed these sentiments: “Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones affected by today’s tragic crash. At PIA, we stand in solidarity with the global aviation community and offer our deepest condolences to all impacted by Flight 171.”
Global Reactions:
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “The tragedy in Ahmedabad has stunned and saddened us. It is heartbreaking beyond words. My thoughts are with everyone affected. I am in touch with authorities assisting in the response.”
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his concern, stating, “The images of the crash are devastating. I am being regularly updated and my thoughts are with the passengers and their families at this deeply distressing time.”
King Charles of the United Kingdom commented, “My wife and I are desperately shocked by the terrible events in Ahmedabad. Our special prayers and deepest sympathy are with the families and friends of those affected by this tragic incident.”
Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus shared a message of support: “We extend our deepest condolences to all the families who lost their dear ones in this tragedy. We stand in solidarity with the people and government of India and offer our full support.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin offered his condolences as well: “Please accept my deep condolences on the tragic consequences of the crash. Convey my sympathy and support to the families and wishes for a swift recovery to the injured.”
French President Emmanuel Macron shared, “We have learned with deep emotion of the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad. In this time of sorrow, I extend our heartfelt thoughts to the victims’ loved ones and Prime Minister Modi.”
