Growing speculation about a possible 28th Constitutional Amendment has triggered widespread political debate. However, government officials now insist that no such proposal is under review. Their repeated clarifications aim to counter claims made earlier by several cabinet members.
Minister Denies Work on New Amendment
The Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, has categorically dismissed reports that the government is preparing any amendment package. He stated that the government is not pursuing a 28th Amendment and stressed that the matter is not under discussion at any official level.
According to him, there is no ongoing work, and no meeting has been held on the subject. He further noted that the current noise surrounding the amendment is largely a media-driven debate.
No Proposal at Prime Minister’s Office
A key official from the Prime Minister’s Office confirmed the minister’s position. The official explained that no constitutional amendment proposal has been examined or reviewed at the PM’s Office. Moreover, he stated that no internal discussion is taking place regarding a fresh amendment initiative.
Dropped 27th Amendment Elements Not Revived Yet
Dr Tariq also clarified an important point. He acknowledged that some proposals originally linked to the 27th Amendment were dropped earlier due to a lack of consensus. Although those ideas may return later, he stressed that no such move is currently happening. Therefore, suggestions about a new amendment are premature.
He added that anyone asking about the 28th Amendment receives the same response. There is no consideration, and there is no process underway.
Confusion Sparked by Earlier Cabinet Statements
Speculation grew after a few cabinet members made public remarks about a new constitutional amendment. An adviser to the prime minister, Rana Sanaullah, recently suggested that the government might introduce a 28th Amendment. He mentioned areas such as local governments, the National Finance Commission, and health-related matters.
He also noted that consultations on these issues were ongoing. However, he said progress depended on achieving broader political consensus.
Another official, the State Minister for Law, was also quoted discussing a potential amendment. Yet he has recently remained unreachable and has not responded to calls.
Government Stance Remains Firm
Despite earlier comments from some leaders, the government’s official position remains unchanged. There is no 28th Constitutional Amendment under process, and no proposal is under examination. With repeated and clear statements, key officials aim to end the speculation surrounding this issue.
