The Islamabad High Court has summoned Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar ul Haq Kakar to personally appear before it on November 29 in relation to the case of missing Baloch students.
The court’s decision follows the government’s failure to locate the missing students despite recommendations from the Baloch Enforced Disappearance Commission. Advocate Imaan Mazari initiated the case, leading to the court’s order for the government to produce the 55 missing students.
The court has also summoned defense and interior ministers, as well as their respective secretaries, seeking a report from the federal government committee within a week.
Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani expressed dissatisfaction with the committee’s report and rejected it, stating that it was a matter of shame for the court. The judge emphasized that the caretaker prime minister and interior minister should have recognized the gravity of the situation concerning Baloch students and taken ownership of the issue.
Despite the existence of a commission with high-profile members, the judge noted that there has been a lack of progress in the case of enforced disappearances.
The Additional Attorney General for Pakistan requested the court not to summon the premier and ministers, but the court insisted on their appearance. Justice Kayani emphasized the court’s commitment to ensuring the implementation of its orders and criticized the government’s failure to address the matter despite numerous court decisions.
The judge highlighted that it is the state’s responsibility to ensure the safe return of the missing individuals and questioned whether the matter should be escalated to international bodies such as the United Nations.
The court said it is doing the job of the executive. “Should we send this matter to the United Nations? Should we dishonour our country?”
