Arvind Kejriwal, Indian opposition leader and Chief Minister of Delhi, has announced his resignation from the position just a day after being released from prison on bail. His release followed nearly six months of detention related to a graft case involving alleged irregularities in Delhi’s liquor policy.
On Sunday, Kejriwal revealed his decision to step down at a meeting with Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) workers. He stated he would only resume the role if voters affirm his integrity in the upcoming Delhi election, which he has urged the election commission to advance to November from its scheduled date in February 2025.
Kejriwal was granted bail by India’s Supreme Court on Friday and left prison on Saturday. His detention had begun in March, just weeks before the national elections, due to allegations connected to Delhi’s liquor policy. Despite being granted bail in July, he remained in custody due to a separate arrest by federal police related to the same case.
Kejriwal, 55, and his party, AAP, maintain that the charges are “politically motivated.”
