WASHINGTON: COAS General Asim Munir engaged in discussions on regional security and bilateral defense cooperation with US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin.
The Pentagon released a brief statement confirming the meeting, mentioning their talks on recent regional security developments and potential areas for collaborative defense efforts.
Simultaneously, the US Department of State expressed eagerness to collaborate with Pakistan’s government on regional security and defense. During a recent press briefing, a spokesperson highlighted the US’s initiatives to partner with Pakistan on anti-terrorism measures this year.
They referenced a high-level counterterrorism dialogue held in March, focusing on shared terrorist threats, border security, and strategies to combat terrorism financing.
The US supports various counter-terrorism capacity-building programs in Pakistan, particularly centered on law enforcement and justice.
General Asim’s visit to the US capital marks his first official trip since assuming office in November of the previous year.
This visit followed the conclusion of US Special Representative for Afghanistan Thomas West’s two-day stay in Islamabad, during which he reiterated Washington’s commitment to stand by Pakistan in its fight against terrorism, especially the challenges posed by the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
West concluded his significant visit to Islamabad, where he discussed regional security and the protection of Afghan refugees, among other crucial matters.
General Asim’s visit coincides with a period of heightened security challenges in Pakistan, particularly from both internal and external terrorist groups. Regions like Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan have been particularly affected by these threats.
