Iran has formally appealed to the United Nations to take action against former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent inflammatory rhetoric, which Tehran deems a violation of international law. Amir Saeid Iravani, Iran’s Permanent Representative to the UN, expressed Tehran’s concerns in a letter addressed to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the President of the Security Council.
Iravani highlighted Trump’s remarks as a direct threat of military action against Iran, which he argued flagrantly contravenes the UN Charter and international law. The former U.S. president’s comments, made during a New York Post interview, suggested that he would prefer to negotiate a deal with Iran rather than resort to military strikes, but still implied that Iran could face devastating consequences if it did not comply with U.S. demands.
In a follow-up interview with Fox News, Trump reiterated this stance, stating his desire to make a deal without resorting to violence. However, Iravani condemned the rhetoric as a clear violation of Article 2(4) of the UN Charter, which prohibits the use of force or threats of force against sovereign nations.
The Iranian envoy also criticized Trump’s broader “maximum pressure” policy towards Iran, asserting that it escalated hostility and violated international norms. Iravani urged the UN Security Council to take decisive action to prevent such dangerous rhetoric from setting a precedent for future international relations.
“Iran will resolutely defend its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national interests against any form of aggression,” he said, emphasizing Iran’s commitment to resisting foreign threats.
The controversy comes amid renewed U.S. sanctions and Trump’s memorandum aiming to reduce Iran’s oil exports to zero, following his 2018 decision to unilaterally withdraw from the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
