The Islamabad Excise Department has issued an important clarification regarding mandatory M-Tags for vehicles entering the capital city.
Officials confirmed that vehicles already equipped with motorway M-Tags do not need to obtain a separate sticker for city entry. This aims to reduce confusion among vehicle owners and ensure smooth compliance.
Bilal Azam, Director of Excise, stated that starting November 18, new stickers will be available at designated checkpoints across Islamabad. He emphasized that M-Tags previously issued from Excise offices remain valid.
Purpose of M-Tags
The initiative is part of the Excise Department’s efforts to streamline vehicle identification and regulation within the capital. M-Tags help authorities efficiently monitor and manage traffic, ensuring security and smooth transit.
Last year, the National Highway Authority (NHA) and Motorway Police made M-Tag registration mandatory for all vehicles using motorways, effective February 5, 2024. Initially, the requirement was relaxed during the first phase, but it has now become obligatory for all motorway users.
How the Process Works
Vehicle owners can obtain M-Tags at Excise offices or through designated checkpoints. Authorities stress that existing tags are recognized, so duplicate stickers are unnecessary.
The move simplifies entry and exit processes at motorway points, allowing vehicles to pass seamlessly without delays. Additionally, it supports traffic management and enhances road safety.
Government’s Focus on Traffic Regulation
The Excise Department’s clarification reflects broader efforts to improve urban mobility. By ensuring all vehicles comply with the M-Tag system, authorities aim to reduce congestion, monitor vehicle flow, and enhance citywide safety.
Moreover, the unified M-Tag system reduces paperwork and eliminates the need for multiple registrations for vehicles already compliant with motorway standards.
Vehicle owners entering Islamabad should ensure their M-Tags are valid and up to date. No new sticker is required if a vehicle already has a motorway M-Tag.
This clarification reinforces Islamabad’s commitment to efficient traffic management and regulatory transparency, benefiting commuters and authorities alike.
