Karachi commuters are set to face significant traffic challenges as authorities announced the closure of University Road from November 10 to December 30. The closure is part of the Karachi Water and Sewerage System Improvement Project (KWSSIP), aimed at upgrading the city’s water infrastructure.
Officials have confirmed that fresh digging and pipeline installation along University Road will directly impact traffic flow. The disruption comes amid ongoing construction projects, including the Red Line and BRT systems, which have already strained road networks.
Details of the Pipeline Project
The section of University Road between Nipa Chowrangi and Federal Urdu University will remain closed throughout the construction period. The closure is necessary for laying new 96-inch and 72-inch pipelines as part of the K-IV augmentation plan, which is vital for enhancing Karachi’s water supply system.
The project involves installing a water network spanning approximately seven kilometres. It will be executed in two phases:
-
Phase One: Nipa Chowrangi to Federal Urdu University
-
Phase Two: Hussain Square to Nipa Chowrangi
Officials emphasized that this upgraded network will form a critical part of the city’s efforts to improve water distribution and supply reliability.
Impact on Commuters
Authorities have urged commuters to plan alternate routes, as University Road traffic is expected to worsen during the construction period. The closure may also increase congestion on adjacent roads, requiring drivers to allow extra travel time.
Experts suggest using parallel roads and public transport options where possible to minimize delays. Additionally, motorists are advised to stay updated on daily traffic advisories issued by city authorities.
Long-Term Benefits
Despite the short-term inconvenience, the project promises significant long-term benefits for Karachi residents. Once completed, the new pipelines will enhance water supply capacity, reduce shortages, and improve service reliability in critical areas of the city.
Authorities continue to coordinate with traffic management teams to ensure minimal disruption and maintain safety around construction zones.
The University Road closure highlights the ongoing infrastructure challenges in Karachi, balancing essential development with commuter needs. While traffic may become more chaotic in the coming weeks, the upgraded water network is expected to benefit the city significantly once completed by the end of December.
